Detail Long Life
Long LifeLong-Life

In the Chinese language, the geometric ideogram ‘shou’, the shape of which resembles a labyrinth, stands for a long, fulfilled, and happy life. In Chinese tradition, it is part of the ‘three wisdoms’: fu (happiness and good fortune), lu (success) and shou (long life). A long life is regarded as something highly desirable. Therefore, old people in China are treated with particular respect.

The ‘shou’ sign symbolises an endless knot that – in a figurative sense – links the beginning and the end. It is one of the most widely used symbols of good luck in China. One can often find it on furniture or jewellery, works of art and decorative items in the home, and also on wedding presents. It is meant to have a direct influence on the life of those who surround themselves with such items.
